In the worlds of substance use prevention and treatment – and public health in a broader sense – it wasn’t all that long ago that the term “harm reduction” was considered taboo in many circles. I can attest to that firsthand, as I was one of those people who was biased against it after years of working in abstinence-based programs like residential addiction treatment or alternative sentencing day treatment for people on probation and parole. And that stands to reason; in a residential setting, continued alcohol/drug use jeopardizes the safety and well-being of the milieu as a whole.
