British post-punk icons Gang of Four released their sophomore album, Solid Gold, 40 years ago today, via EMI/Warner Bros. Following on from 1979’s debut, Entertainment!, Solid Gold followed suit as one of the era’s most highly regarded records. In true British punk/post-punk style, the lyrics were heavily based on politics, looking at social issues, and even war. Their observationalist attitude is what made them relatable, with Jon King and Andy Gill’s writing encouraging fans to think for themselves without being patronizing or arrogant.
