Since the release Life Metal, the mainstream breakout album recorded by Steve Albini, Sunn O))) has reached their highest potential. Life Metal sounded as close to Sunn O)))’s live shows as possible, capturing the essence of the room and the frenzied sound of many amplifiers being pushed to the limit. Since the release of that amazing album, Sunn O))) has continued to put out other satisfying derivates of the work. First came Pyroclasts, the Albini-recorded improvisations between Sunn O))) and the session members on the album. The titles even included the keys the improvisations were played in. Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson instructed the players, which included composer Hildur Guðnadóttir and Tim Midyett among others, to improvise drones with them to begin each session.
