Despite its ominous title, shades of darkness and lyrics that talk about exploitative labour and religious discord, this second album from German hardcore quintet Giver is a deceptively vibrant collection. There are plenty of desolate screams and bleak guitars, but these 10 tracks are underpinned by a keen ear for melody, resulting in an immediate, energetic record whose sheer power resonates long after it comes to a close. The best moments arrive early on, with opener Night Season characterised by vigorous riffs and impactful vocals, while the title-track’s raging metallic punk is another rampant highlight.
