A few days ago, in a marquee at Download Festival, there was a mixture of confusion and excitement in the air as Empire State Bastard made their Download debut. Excitement because it was the chance to see what members of Biffy Clyro, Oceansize and Slayer sound like when they get together and confusion because, as Mike Vennart describes it, what spews out is “the most fucking poisonous vile music, just unabridged hatred in musical form.” Roll the clock forward, and the supergroup are playing the more intimate confines of the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.
