Duane Hoover – ‘Wayward Path’ [Album Review]

Atlanta-based musician Duane Hoover releases his new long player, Wayward Path, a collection of songs inspired by the Brit Invasion of the ’60s and ’70s, including both cover songs and original songs. What’s unique about the album is that Hoover doesn’t imitate the originals while adding a few flourishes. Rather, he modifies and bends, adding modern flavors even as he bows to the inherent sensibilities of the prototypes. Made up of 12 tracks, Wayward Path begins with “Sorrow,” a song recorded by the McCoys, The Merseybeats, and David Bowie. Hoover’s interpretation is totally different than any of his predecessors, conjuring up suggestion of early The Who with ringing guitars and ripping drums.
