How do you keep things fresh nearly 20 years after keeping a then-dying style alive? Is it possible to stay creatively inspired when you’ve already hit your peak? Origin feels like a brand-new start for Finnish melodeath mainstays Omnium Gatherum, a band who really have carved out their own niche in the ever-fertile melodeath scene. Over their fertile career—and especially after 2008’s Redshift—Omnium Gatherum’s sound leaned more heavily into the brighter aspects that were already present. It wouldn’t be unfair to say they group were always on the more melodic side of melodeath, but the subtle yet significant shift away from extremity has been a great one for the band.
