While many folks today are out celebrating Independence Day, post-punk band Mission of Burma are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their album Signals, Calls, and Marches, initially released July 4, 1981. The album’s first track, and one of the band’s most popular songs, “That’s When I Reach for My Revolver,” has one of the more singable and catchier choruses, with the juxtaposition of Mission of Burma’s live performances, often known for their abrasive and noisy aura. The album received critical acclaim, and it is currently considered a landmark of indie and alternative rock music. Pitchfork ranked the album as the 53rd greatest album of the 1980s.
