“I put that record on just to make a sound.” So opens the Bouncing Souls’ fifth album, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, which turns 20 today. The Souls’ brand of “pogo punk” is punchy, and here all of the instruments are loud and land hard. When this music hits though, there’s no pain. Greg Attonito’s propelling lead vocals, coupled with anthemic gang vocals, are an unstoppable force of positivity, making the album a joy to revisit. Lyrically, songs are about love – whether of music or people – and reflection. Even in the thematically-downbeat tunes, the vocals keep things upbeat.
