Album Review: Suppression – The Sorrow of Soul Through Flesh

Dust off that denim jacket and those white high-top sneakers with fat tongues, Chile’s Suppression is making their debut with a death metal album any old-school elitist would approve of. The Sorrow of Soul Through Flesh is a 10-track pure throwback to the late-’80s, Floridian death barrage vanguard by influential bands like Death, Morbid Angel, and Obituary, to name a few. The homage opens with “Lifelessness,” popping off a duel guitar tremolo riff that is joined by a punishing blast beat. After a few thrashes, we’re introduced to vocalist Alejandro Cruz, who’s gritty growl is a perfect blend of David Vincent (Morbid Angel) from the Covenant album, and John Tardy (Obituary).
