Album Review: Slang – Cockroach In A Ghost Town (Kill Rock Stars)

More than a decade after their founding, Slang, made up of Portland music vets Drew Grow and Janet Weiss, have finally gotten around to releasing their debt, Cockroach In A Ghost Town, and while it may have taken a while it was definitely worth the wait. Across 10 track, Front man Grow (formerly with Modern Kin and the Pastors’ Wives) and drummer Weiss (Quasi, Wild Flag, and Sleater-Kinney), offer a brilliant set of frenetic and satisfyingly eclectic snatches of indie rock. The duo brought in bassist Kathy Foster (Roseblood, The Thermals) and guitarist Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce) to help round out the band made and filled the record with cameos by Quasi’s Sam Come’s, Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag).
