Pass Away grew up a bit from their last album. While The Hell I’ve Always Seen had the reckless intensity of someone in their irresponsible 20s, Thirty Nine follows up with a calmer approach while not letting up on their youthful spirit. “Chic’s Beach” unexpectedly starts the album off with an acoustic number, although it lets the listener know that there may be a slight departure, it is not a type intro that some bands tack on the beginning of some albums. It is one of two acoustic songs on the album, with “Bushwick” (“It’s a miracle I never died in my sleep” is a wonderfully haunting lyric) being the other.
