Album Review: Mental Cruelty – A Hill to Die Upon

Look, I don’t know where it occurred or who all were there to vote, but clearly some super-secret underground deathcore meeting of the minds occurred where it was decided (all the votes were “BREE” so it’s hard to parse out the “yays” and “nays”) that the new era of deathcore will involve an infusion of symphonic black metal. I kid, since blackened deathcore has existed for well over a decade, thanks to torch-bearers like Winds Of Plague, Carnifex, and Bleeding Through. However, acts like Lorna Shore and Shadow of Intent have helped reinvigorate the previously dormant style in unexpected and delightful ways.
