Mastodon are back, and they’ve done a hell of a job polishing their newest album, Hushed & Grim. The 15-track album is a journey through multiple genres of metal while maintaining a coherent sound throughout. Hushed & Grim offers killer guitar solos, song transitions that will take you on a ride of differing metal genres, and differing inspirations. In some songs I hear Iron Maiden, while in others, I swear, I hear Genesis. Combine all of these factors, and you get one of the reasons that not only makes this a solid album, but make Mastodon a great band. Opening on a drum fill that sounds like a stampede, “Pain With An Anchor,” the first song on Hushed & Grim, is a dark, metal ballad that sets up the tone for the album nicely.
