Album Review: Josh Caterer – The Hideout Sessions

It’s no secret that Josh Caterer, front man for The Smoking Popes, has one of the finest voices in the world of punk rock. Going back to 1995’s Born To Quit, their sophomore effort and first real exposure to a mass audience via Capitol Records, it was hard not to find a review or article about the group at the time that didn’t reference Caterer’s crooning vocals; a Midwest Morrissey (minus the nutty rightwing nationalism that would become Morrissey’s brand post-Brexit). Backed by a wall of distorted guitars and heavy drumming, Caterer’s vocals would soar over the music in a way that shouldn’t work, but absolutely did.
