Album Review: Hasufel- Exaltation

The new record Exaltation from prolific experimental artist Dylan Ettinger, otherwise known as Hasufel, opens ominously. Subterranean, cascading synths are covered by feedback before a mystical melody is accented by whispering voices, vocals that sound like a man proselytizing over a speaker, and high synth notes. Like much of this concise EP, the opening track “School of the Prophets” is open and sprawling but simply following a steady trajectory. Then the cascade folds in on itself and crumbles around the listener. A piercing high sound makes the transition to “White Mildew” before more warm synths reverberate with the sounds of chains and spoken word.
