Album Review: Adult Books- Grecian Urn

Grecian Urn, the new album from Southern California band Adult Books is easy on the ears but that’s about all that it has to offer. The record floats by in dreamy surf-rock inspired post-punk, but there is little original about it. Both the lead and background vocals cause cringe-shivers in the first song “Innocence.” There are sun-soaked guitars and vocal melodies in “Receiver” that are so accessible it almost hurts. The title track is the first moment the album grabs your ears, with a pulsating synth bass that sets up the rhythm of the track. Here the guitar tone shimmers quietly while the drums and bass position themselves firmly in the foreground. The vocals are nothing special but they fit right in.
