A big part of black metal’s notable history (murder and church burning aside) is a clear focus on honoring the legends by not straying too far from the established templates. While the modern black metal scene certainly has some truly unique offshoots (post, folk, dissonant, etc.), the likelihood that a new band can be easily traced back to Emperor, Immortal, or Dissection is about as high as someone with a Trump flag being a racist—it’s not 100 percent, but the Venn diagram looks a lot like a circle. Abhoria have emerged from the fertile California scene with members from Ashen Horde, Catheter, and Vimana.
