Trends change, but I’ve never in my lifetime seen the thirst for punk music die. It shows up in surprising ways, like when Olivia Rodrigo gets arenas full of impressionable kids singing along to punk songs even if they aren’t using that word. Or when Green Day fill stadiums to play 20- and 30-year-old albums in full to people who weren’t born when they came out. Or when a brutally heavy hardcore band like Knocked Loose finds themselves shockingly adjacent to mainstream success. This stuff’s obviously not all over the radio and television like it was in the ’90s and 2000s, but new generations still crave it and, fortunately, the great records do not stop coming. 2024 was an amazing year for punk, so amazing that it was very hard to narrow all the great records ...
