Sharon den Adel always knew she could sing. What she didn’t realise until later in life was that she had the power to turn her passion into her profession. Within Temptation are now firmly established as one of the biggest rock bands to have emerged from mainland Europe in the last 20 years, but that initally seemed like nothing more than a far-flung fantasy. In her native Netherlands, there was little to suggest rock could be a viable career path. The bands that Sharon admired – everyone from Metallica to Nirvana – all came from America, after all. Worse still, after returning to school in her homeland following periods spent overseas, Sharon was such an outcast that she became a target for bullying.
