Album Review: Christian Death – Evil Becomes Rule

Few bands match the turbulent history, mystique, and drama of goth rock veterans Christian Death. They have become as steeped in lore as the gods and demons they sing about. Providing a brief history of the 43-year-old institution that is Christian Death would be impossible, but I’ll attempt it anyway. Originally formed in Los Angeles in 1979 by Rozz Williams, the band released the goth masterpiece Only Theatre of Pain in 1982, invented deathrock as we know it, then immediately disintegrated due to drug use and fighting. Williams then merged with fellow touring band, Pompeii 99 – which included Valor Kand – and their label urged them to keep the name Christian Death for its highly marketable shock value aspect.
