Cancer Bats are a genre-bending Canadian hardcore punk outfit that have been making sick grooves for 18 years and have never once played by the rules. The band formed in 2004 with the goal of fusing their favorite aspects of Entombed, Led Zeppelin, Black Flag, and Refused (to name a few) into a sonic chimaera of sorts. They knew right away they had to name this Frankenstein creation after an illness combined with an animal to make it strong. In the end, “Pneumonia Hawk” lost out to the unforgettable combo of “Cancer” and “Bats,” (although it did become a song title so the genius didn’t go to waste).
