Twenty-five years ago today, Goldfinger released their self-titled debut album. When they stick it on, the very first thing the listener hears is feedback, before the band are counted in to the scratchy punk of “Mind’s Eye.” With decades under the bridge, John Feldmann’s vocals instantly bring on an air of nostalgia. And it’s through that air that he casts hook after hook: for these songs are damn catchy, in that way that makes one wonder why they don’t listen to them every day. The music is punchy, pushing its way through the world, into ears, but rarely in a rough way, except on a few occasions (most obviously in “The City With Two Faces”).
