Omega—the brand new album from the long-running Dutch symphonic metal group Epica, which drops February 26 via Nuclear Blast Records—feels just about instantly majestic. Although the towering music, which features both resounding heavy metal instrumentation and richly developed orchestral elements, is very dramatic, it’s not airy. Rather, there’s a powerful emotional grounding. The music is richly passionate, delivering a sense of emotional outpouring on a cosmically grand scale. Omega sounds like the work of some imposing and thoroughly moving celestial orchestra, because the sound is formidable, but it’s also pretty much inescapably poignant.
