Transformation. It’s both the theme of so many beloved children’s stories (Transformers/Animorphs/Cronenberg’s The Fly) and a buzzword for every company layoff ever. My issue with it as a concept is that we always focus on the after and not on the before. We remember the prince and not the frog before fate’s (disgusting) kiss. However, it’s in the tales of the most grotesque transformations where I connect with the thought of what we fear for, what may become of us. Think of Gregor Samsa as a huge insect in Kafka’s infamous Metamorphosis—we empathize for the horror of that cataclysmic change.
