Album Review: Neckbolt – Midwestern Drawl

On Neckbolt’s debut full-length, Midwestern Drawl, the Austin based band delve straight into challenging, anxiety-ridden anti-songs. From the opening moments of “The Saddle,” a jangly, trebly guitar rips through the high-end over a wash of simple percussion and fuzzed-out, effect-laden vocals. As the track slowly devolves, it drops into a screech of alternating tones that carry over into the albums lead single, “Jawline.” Twirling wooshes of delay pedal knobs being twisted spring from the background bed of distorted guitar riffs and unintelligible yelps and moans. It’s clear Neckbolt aren’t concerned about your comfort. The record’s 11 tracks lean closer to a sonic experiment than an album of songs.
