Album Review: Great Lakes – Contenders (HHBTM records)

On their first record in four years, the psych-coated indie rock band Great Lakes prove they have not lost any of the immediacy or creativity in their two-plus decades together as a band. Across 10 tracks, the band’s seventh album, Contenders also happens to be among one of their best yet, in part thanks to a more rootsy sound on songs like “Baby’s Breath” and “Way Beyond The Blue.” Influences from Gram Parsons and The Band, like many of their earlier efforts, echo throughout this record, but that’s not to say the band has gone full Nashville Americana.
