Album Review – Cave In – Heavy Pendulum

Given how the cards were stacked against them, no one would have blamed Cave In if they (uh) caved in and folded at this point in their careers. You’re talking about one of the busiest men in music with Steve Brodsky (Converge, Mutoid Man, Old Man Gloom, his solo career) and a band still mourning the loss of Caleb Scofield. Plus, this is a group who have had their fits and starts and label misfortunes in their 27 years, not to mention a unique musical jitteriness, where comfort with a certain sound lasts about as long as a piece of “long-lasting” gum. That’s not to say there have been dips in quality; far from it, when you consider the fact that Cave In are a seminal metalcore, space rock, post-hardcore, and progressive hardcore band, depending on which record you look at.
