On Black Lung’s fourth full-length album, Dark Waves, the Baltimore group expands upon their near-decade-long career of hazy stoner rock jams. Following their third record, Ancients in 2019, guitarist Adam Bufano departed the group with the remaining members—guitarist/vocalist Dave Cavalier and drummer Elias Schutzman—reworking the band, which had previously been a three-piece of dual guitars and drums, into a more conventional four-piece arrangement. With the addition of second guitarist Dave Fullerton and bassist Mac Hewett, Black Lung are able to spread out their sound a bit more on Dark Waves, sounding larger and fuller while maintaining the blues-driven heavy rock sound they have established.
