Album Review: Adult Mom – Driver

Imagining a sunny yet personal indie rock record that’s been somewhat mellowed out by a sort of metaphysical anxiety would leave you pretty close to the feelings of Driver, the latest album from the New York indie pop-rock project Adult Mom, which drops on March 5 via Epitaph Records. Adult Mom is the performance moniker for Stevie Knipe, and on Driver, Knipe seems to grapple with the contrast between an inward drive for self-expression alongside outward interpersonal and social pressures, whether or not those pressures are even completely articulated.  The melodies on Driver feel bright, and on tracks like “Adam” and “Frost,” Knipe’s sound gets blustery like a brisk and strangely invigorating autumn wind, but there’s also an undertow in the sound that seems to reflect a sometimes all-too-...
