The Hacienda, Manchester’s legendary nightclub, was opened in 1982 by TV presenter and Factory Records entrepreneur Tony Wilson. Wilson had proven himself as an astute talent spotter via his showcases of new music on local TV, including his very own Joy Division, a band that encapsulated the bleak Mancunian landscape like no other. Following the death of lead singer Ian Curtis in May 1980 and their subsequent reformation as New Order, Wilson needed somewhere for the band and his growing roster of other acts to play. The Hacienda on Whitworth Street provided that playground.
