One of the most highly anticipated metal albums of 2022 finally arrived on May 6th from Nuclear Blast Records: Ibaraki’s debut album, Rashomon. Ibaraki is the newly formed black metal side project of Trivium frontman Matt K. Heafy and legendary Emperor frontman Ihsahn. Heafy was a big black metal fan growing up; pre-Trivium, he was in a black metal band named Mindscar, he frequently wears Emperor shirts onstage, and considered making a black metal album as early as 2009. He sent some demos to a producer with an email to relay them to Ihsahn. After some time, Ihsahn responded along the lines of, “Good job.” This started a longtime friendship between the two.
