News: We Are the Union Lead Singer Reade Wolcott Comes Out as Trans

We Are the Union, a ska band former in Ann Arbor, MI in 2005, has risen through the ranks of punk scenes in North America for years, and now songwriter and lead singer Reade Wolcott is opening up: she is a trans woman. The announcement was first reported by Spin Magazine, Wolcott indicating the band’s 2018 record Self Care was one of the first opportunities for her to open up about mental health through music. She told Spin that her dysphoria was often a theme in the band’s lyrics in retrospect, “Everything that I’ve ever sung about, and everything that I’ve ever struggled with mentally is rooted in my dysphoria.
